　運転免許は州により期限が決められていますが、普通は「その州に住んでから1～2か月以内」となっています。

　但し、これは厳密ではなく特に罰則規定もない様なのでそれ程気にすることはありません。

　現に私の場合、アメリカに赴任した直後から仕事が忙しく試験場に行く時間がなく、やっと運転免許を手にしたのは定住後6ヶ月過ぎた後でした。それまでは日本から持参した「国際運転免許証」で運転してました。

運転免許を取る（ライセンスを取得する）

受験資格検査	いわゆる運転免許取得試験を受ける資格があるかどうかの確認検査がありあす。次のような書類が揃っていれば問題ありません。　次の各書類に対して点数が設定されていて、合計点数が6点以上で合格です。実は点数設定項目は非常に多くあって複雑ですが、日本人が受験する場合には次のようなものを準備すれば問題ありません。　・パスポート（4点）　・日本の運転免許証　・国際免許証　・VISA（４点）　・ソーシャルセキュリティーナンバー（1点）　・水orガスなどの領収書　・銀行のキャッシュカード（1点）　・クレジットカード

運転免許証取得試験	自動車の運転で一番大事なことは、必要な視力があるかということで、受験受付時に、先ず「視力検査」を受けます。眼鏡が必要な人は眼鏡をかけた状態で検査します。　視力検査は顕微鏡のようなレンズを覗き込んで行う機械検査です。日本と同じような上下左右に切り口の開いた図形の出口方向を答える検査もありますが、最近の例では3種類の検査が実施されていあす。１．数字の識別検査　・検査機械をのぞき込むと、3段にわたって数字や英文字が並んでいます。　・検査官が「〇段目の文字を左から順番に読みなさい」と指示します。　・文字を順番に読んで終了です。２．遠近感確認検査　・検査機械を覗くと、いくつかの標識が見えます。　・検査官が「標識を自分に近いところにある順にいいなさい」と指示します。　・近く見える順に3つ答えて終了です。３．試験内容を忘れてしまいました。　何か「体力検査」というか、身体的に運転できない事情がないかというような検査、質問があったような気もしますが、ちょっと忘れてしまいました。運転に支障を来すような身体的不自由や重度な色網障害がある場合には合格できないことがあるかも知れません。　受験は筆記検査と実技検査に分かれますが、日本人の場合なら、大抵は国際免許を持って赴任、定住していますので、実技試験は免除されます。筆記試験については、簡単な質問に答えるだけの常識的なものだけです。　多くの州では日本語での受験が可能なので全く問題はありません。
運転免許証の有効期限	アメリカの運転免許証にも有効期限があります。アメリカの免許証の有効期間は、その人の居住条件によって次のように異なります。　１．アメリカの市民権や永住権（グリーンカード）保有者　　　・免許証の有効期限は「5年間」です。　２．学生ビザや就労ビザなどの非移民ビザ保有者　　　・免許証の有効期間は、その人の「合法的な滞在期間終了」までです。　ここで、合法的な滞在期間終了までというのは、その人が持っているビザの有効期限までという意味で、ビザが失効するまで使えることになります。　それぞれのビザの有効期限は、その人ごとに異なるので、自分のビザの有効期限についてはしっかり確認しておきましょう。　尚、日本で発行される国際運転免許証の有効期限は、ビザとは無関係に一律で「1年間」となっています。このことも重要なので、よく理解しておきましょう。　一時的な海外旅行や、短期滞在であれば、日本の国際免許証があれば問題はありませんが、1年以上の滞在期間になる場合には、アメリカの運転免許証を取得しなければ、一切運転できなくなりますので注意してください。
